Jan 16 Mon. I have placed a yarn order and its not enroute yet so I convince Danny I need more yarn, now! I finished my last project 3 days ago and I love crocheting or knitting while watching TV at night. Michael crafts is in Port Orange, near the theater so its a 2-fer. Actually there is a breakfast place called Flapjacks & More and I want pancakes so we have a 3-fer. I ended up changing my mind about the pancakes and had eggs and grits, and that was just perfect. Then we went to the theater to see Hidden Figures. We really enjoyed that movie. I still have to shake my head, looking back to college in 69-71 and all the comments I got about Computer Science not being a "women's field" The women in this story were busting that myth open years before, and they called them 'computers' people who were gifted in math. Michaels was the next stop and I forgot why Dan never objects to Michaels....Jordan Almonds. He finds a big bag and is very content all the way home.
Jan 17 Tues. It's tuesday.....$5 movie in New Smyrna. Sometimes we just get moving slow in the morning and it's afternoon before we even come outside. We feel rather indifferent to most of the movies available but decide we'll give Jamie Foxx a try in Sleepless. I'm really glad we signed up for the Carmike Club cause I really enjoyed the popcorn! This movie is just silly, we began picking the story apart within 10 minutes, once the lead actor gets stabbed, and he can hardly walk, but he can still take a beating and dish out a beating for several hours in between hobbling down halls ways and bleeding through a couple changes of cloths, it really was just silly! But they have great popcorn.
| It's hard for us to relate to this much fresh produce in January |
Jan 18 Wed. Deland Flea Market, and we really are up and on the road at 9, but for a flea market we were arriving as the real early birds were already pulling out of the parking lot, lucky for us. We wanted to find a woodworker who makes signs. We wandered through the farmers market section and oohed and aahed at the produce. Then out to the flea market section and we wandered through aisles and aisles of 'stuff' before stopping and assessing this. If the guy we are looking for a booth where someone uses power tools would have to be where there is power. So we spot a building and head that way, inside we don't find what we want but I want what we find, a new Chefs knife. This was a recurring theme every time I was slicing meat, "Why didn't I put my Chefs knife in the Lake House?" And as we leave the building there is the woodworkers! So we decide what we want and order up a nice wood sign to hang on the front of the rig, to be picked up next Wednesday. Now we are in need of food and the smell of smoked meat is pulling us right along to a place selling pulled pork sandwiches. yummy! and yummy! After sitting down to eat it became obvious our feet were done for the day. As we headed for the truck we talked about Butters bed and the fact that ice think it needs for stuffing. I think we can get pieces of memory foam at Jo-Anns and I know that Jo-anns is in Daytona Beach. So we head northeast and find foam, just regular foam, but I think it will be enough for the dogs bed. And off to home. We are just sitting around outside when our neighbors Dick and Marilyn pull in and we asked which seafood place they would recommend for Danny's fish fix. He'd been saying he wanted Mahi-Mahi for dinner for about 5 days now, and today we will take care of that. Well Dick says Bostons, and as it is just after 4 now would be the time to go and beat the rush. So we take their advice and go. We did beat the rush, and after we were seated it was a pretty steady flow of people coming in the door. Maybe we needed to wait and watch what everybody was ordering because Dan had Cajun Mahi-Mahi and I ordered grilled shrimp and both were overcooked. It was an okay dinner but $5.95 for draft beer and overcooked seafood means we will find other places to dine. By the way, it seemed every other plate coming out of the kitchen was piled high with batter fried food of one sort or another, maybe thats their speciality. We had discussed the pulled pork we had earlier and decided tomorrow was smoking day, so we stopped at Publix and got the fixings for dinner tomorrow before heading on home for a quiet night of TV. Butter let us know we left her home too much today.
| People laugh when I say we have a 90 lb. lap dog. |
Jan 19 Thurs. Receive the new lights. Danny wants to install two outside motion activated lights. I think it was spurred on by the bikes getting stolen, and that he needs lights on the back side at night. Hopefully we will get them installed soon. Grill pork butt, and we were talking with Jeff about the Traeger while it ran all day, so when we ask Jeff and Kathy to join us for a early dinner and we have to declare the pork butt a success, but I have plans. We had purchased tickets for the local community theater, and tonight is our first show, Jesus Christ Superstar, it was different. Just before the play started we were hanging around outside waiting for the launch. There was a 45 minute launch window and if it went off right away we could see it, well we had to go in and claim our seats, and when we got out we found they scrubbed the launch, so tomorrow.
Jan 20 Fri. Off on our bikes to Dennys this morning, I wanted pancakes, its just maybe 1/2 a mile and there are sidewalks all the way, but it was enough to test the adjustments and we both needed to raise our seats. By the time we got back home we had to look up how to fix my rear brakes which would drag. Glad we didn't go far. After talking to our neighbor Jeff we took off in the truck to go find the bike path and dog park, and we found both. Next outing we will bring the bikes over to the park and ride the 4 mile path, away from traffic. Our return was over to the Dixie highway and right by DD which required a Chai and donut break. I figured if I wrapped the leftover butt in foil with bar-b-q sauce and mustard and some apple juice and just let it sit on the grill while we cooked links for dinner it would be pull-able, of coarse after we ate, we just came inside and about 2 hrs later I went out and remembered we had it going. So I opened up the foil and shredded the port and gave Butter the little bits of fat that came off. We'll see how it is tomorrow. I had been following the launch plans after yesterdays abort and at about 7:50 it looked like we were going to see a launch, sort of. We have a mostly cloudy sky tonight so we saw a flare just as it came up then clouds then another flare, then it was gone, darn clouds! But we did see little bits.
Jan 21 Sat. We decided to try that pork butt tonight and what a treat that was. Baked a potato and piled shredded pork and sauce on it. Great dish!
Jan 22 Sun. Today we have a dicey weather forecast so we get up and batten all the hatches, the awning comes in and all the chairs are put away. I clean the house and then we head over to Azteca for Shrimp chowder....yummy! and drinks are 2 for 1 double yippee. So after Margaritas and soup we head on back home for football games and tornado warnings....
Jan 23 Mon. Just stay home and wait out the rain, very quiet day. We got out the dvd of lessons 1 and 2 for open water diving and watched it and went through those 2 chapters of the book.
Jan 24 Tues. Time to get the laundry done and get ready for our first scuba lesson. Book lesson, we meet Wes, our classmate. We spend about 3 hours on class and 45 mins. scoping out gear and visiting with Wes and Keith, the owner of SeaDogs Dive shop.
Jan 26 Thurs. We have our first 'in the water' class this evening at 6 so we have a late lunch and head to the Dive shop at 5 to check out wetsuits. Trying on wetsuits is work! after 2 Danny declared he was done or he'd be too tired to swim tonight and since we are going to be in a 80 degree indoor pool tonight we will stick to swim sets and find the right wetsuit size at a later date. We get to the pool and learn just how much it takes when your new to this just to get the gear all assembled. Then its into the deep end, that is the 4.5' end. You might wonder what can you do in 4 1/2 ft of water. First there is just the part about convincing your body that you can breathe underwater. Then we practice just dropping to our knees and back up by releasing air from our BCD's and then filling it back up again. We have a set of skills to learn tonight and clearing masks, recovering regulators and sharing air from our alternate air source. It is amazingly tiring! After 3 hrs in the pool and getting all the gear unassembled, then shower and into dry cloths and we are off to TacoBell, I'm starving!
Jan 28 Sat. flipping cold! We decide to take a drive down to see if we can see the Manatee. We have been told to take Highway 1 to Shiloh road then follow it down to a sign for Manatee viewing area. That sounds easy. but as we approach the destination we see smoke...lots of smoke. Seems they are doing a 'controlled burn' today and the winds shifted, so the main road is closed for 'some time' maybe 40 minutes. We just pull over and wait it out. The helicopter is dropping little chemical balls to speed the burn and control the area. Different! After about 20 minutes a truck comes north out of the smoke leading the traffic from the south and as Danny has taken Butter out for a stroll we miss the caravan going south, but we get in line for the next cycle. The area burned is just a few miles, but at the end is the turn off for the viewing area and it is barricaded. So we decide to keep going to the Blackpoint Wildlife Drive. This is a very interesting circle road off highway 3 and we enjoy all the birds, WoodStork, Egrets, Coots and many more.

Jan 31 Tues. Class time this evening and we go in early enough to try on another wetsuit or two and I have found one online that might fit and decided to order it and if it fits then great, if not returns are accepted. We finish up the class and we are scheduled for another pool dive on Thurs and a trip to De Leon Springs on Sunday morning. And that is the end of another month 'On the road, in the Lake House'
